KILLYMOON LADIES WIN ALL-IRELAND TITLE

The Killymoon ladies have won the prestigious Revive Active Four-ball All Ireland title after overcoming a very strong and determined Munster Champion Club Ballybunion GC in the final at Royal Tara Golf Club

Having negotiated a safe passage through the Ulster section defeating Dungannon GC, Rossmore GC, County Cavan GC, Tandragee GC and Ballycastle GC in the Ulster Final, the Ulster Champions travelled to new ground at Royal Tara GC to take on the provincial champions from the other three provinces.

Royal Tara Golf Club was the host of the Revive Active Four-ball National Finals where Lucan, Ballybunion, Killymoon and Portumna are this year's semi-finalists.

In the first of the semi-finals, first honours went to Dublin GAA star Kate Whyte and her partner Anne Seymour when the Lucan pair overcame Diane McIvor and Avril Marshall of Killymoon. However, despite Lucan being ahead in 4 of the 5 matches through 12 holes, Killymoon never lost faith. With two matches already culminating on the 18th green in favour of the Ulster club, Colleen Conway broke Lucan hearts when she confidently 2 putted from 20 feet, enough for a 2-hole victory and a place in the Revive Active Four-ball National Final.

2015 National Four-ball winners Ballybunion faced Western Champions Portumna in the second semi-final. Fresh from her win with Ireland at the Senior Women's Home Internationals during the week, Suzanne Corcoran and partner Mary McElroy carded a 3&2 victory for the Portumna side, but Ballybunion ensured the match was quickly level again when Gilmore and O'Connell won by the same margin moments later. The fourth pairing of Joyce and O'Donoghue made easy work of their match, closing it out on the 12th green which left two matches to be decided. Catriona Corrigan & Pudge O'Reilly claimed the winning point when they won the 16th and 17th holes leaving the middle match to be called-in and declared a half.

Killymoon (3) Lucan (2) (Killymoon names first): Diane McIvor & Avril Marshall lost to Kate Whyte & Anne Seymour 4&3; Carmel Hagan & Catherine Irwin beat Ada Bowler & Una Murphy 1 hole; Heather Campbell & Donna Mulholland beat Molly Dowling & Paula Fay 1 hole; Kathryn Kerr & Colleen Conway beat Patricia Kelly & Sandra McCaffrey 2 holes; Anne MacMahon & Anne McCrea lost to Yvonne Barry & Cathy McEvoy 3&2

Having qualified for the final, the Killymoon ladies now faced Ballybunion in the final.

At the turn, the two sides were inseparable. Carmel Hagan and Catherine Irwin of Killymoon carded the first win on the 15th green, two points from two for the duo. In the top match, Ballybunion pairing of Mary Sheehy and Louise Griffin had a point to prove having lost their semi-final match-up yesterday and looked like doing so with one hole to play. However, the last hole went in favour of McIvor and Marshall meaning extra holes were needed. Killymoon emerged eventual winners on the 20th, a crucial turn.

With two matches already finalised, Killymoon needed just one more point to claim victory. Once Catriona Corrigan and Pudge O'Reilly had finished their match 3&1 the tie hung on the fourth match to decide. It was Kathryn Kerr and Colleen Conway who would seal the win for the Ulster club with a birdie 4 on the last from Conway, a 23 handicapper.

"It's a great honour for our small club to win this event," said Catherine Irwin, team captain of Killymoon. "It is our first win and I am so proud of this team for putting our small Cookstown club on the map!"

ILGU President Vonnie Noonan spoke at the final presentation; "The ILGU are delighted that Revive Active will sponsor the event for a third time again next year, it is great that such an outstanding product is associated with our Four-ball Championship, we are greatly appreciative of all of our sponsors."
